Personal Support Worker Training Program


The goal of the PSW course - personal support worker training program is to provide personal, emotional and supportive care to clients of all ages suffering with mental , cognitive, and physical disabilities living in long term care facilities, residential homes, supportive housing and hospices. 

The main emphasis is placed on the role of the personal worker in assisting with client care, empowering and respecting clients autonomy, values,beliefs and in being a facilitator in the healing process of clients suffering from physical and emotional pain.

Course length 640 hours:

Course d
uration 6 months.

Pre-requesite : High school diploma, first aid cpr for adult and children, hepatitis B vaccine, TB mantoux skin test, criminal reference check the college reserved to right to deny students admission that has a conviction that is not pardoned.

Course offered days evening and weekends

Course includes a 9 week clinical placement  that students are expected to complete in a nursing home, retirement or group home setting.

Module 8 :        Providing Optimal Support/care Planning

Module 9 :       Assisting a Person with Personal Hygeine

Module 10:     Assisting the Family

Module 11:     Cognitive Impairement  and Mental Health Issues

Module 12:     Assisting a Person to Manage Ongoing Conditions

Module 13:    Assisting a Person with Medication

Module 14:    Assisting a Person who is Dying





Course format:  Instructor led, lab demonstration, group discussion, student assignment and research paper.
 

Course may be completed in days evening and weekend.

Note : Students with  prior learning experience may qualify for credits if they meet the criteria.
                                                                       




A Certificate is awarded upon completion of the course, student must successfully pass the theory, clinical component of the course and received a grade of 70%.
